The Abduction of Psyche: the painting behind the PSYCHE TEE

William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted The Abduction of Psyche in 1895. Cupid carries Psyche up through the clouds, her eyes closed, violet drapery falling away from them. It is one of the most reproduced paintings of the nineteenth century, and one of the most tender.

The myth comes from Apuleius. Psyche was a mortal so beautiful that people stopped worshipping Venus. Venus sent her son Cupid to punish her; he fell in love instead. Psyche broke the one rule he gave her, lost him, and then walked through four impossible trials and into the underworld itself to win him back. She risked everything for love, and she got it.
