Why MARTYRZ: what the word martyr really means

People ask us two things about the name. Why martyr? And why the Z?

Martyr means witness

Martyr comes from the ancient Greek word martys, a witness, someone who testifies to what they have seen. Early on it meant exactly that. Later it came to mean a person who held on to what they believed even when it cost them everything.

That second meaning is where MARTYRZ starts. Not suffering for its own sake, but conviction: the kind of person who would rather risk it all than live halfway.

Classic myths, modern martyrs

The old myths are full of these people. Icarus, who flew higher than anyone had ever flown and fell. Psyche, who lost the god she loved and walked into the underworld to bring him back. Orpheus, who went down to the dead for Eurydice. Prometheus, who stole fire for humans and was chained to a rock for it.

They were not perfect, and most of them paid. But they are remembered because they chose what they loved over what was safe. MARTYRZ turns each of those stories into a chapter: one painting, one myth, one drop. Chapter one is Icarus and Psyche: Too Close To The Sun.

Why the Z

The Z is what makes it ours. Martyrs is a word anyone can use. MARTYRZ is a name: a brand that takes the old meaning and wears it on the street. Always written in capitals, always with a Z.
